Our Devices Explained: Why We Use BBL HEROic & MOXI at Epios in Sydney

At Epios we use two Sciton® platforms to address visible signs of photoageing: BBL HEROic (broadband filtered light) for colour concerns and MOXI (non-ablative fractional thulium laser) for surface tone and fine texture. Used alone or together, they let us tailor staged or combined treatment plans to your skin, goals and schedule.

What BBL HEROic and MOXI are: Sciton® light & laser platforms for skin.

  • BBL HEROic uses filtered light - not a laser - to target brown pigmentation (melanin) and red vessels (haemoglobin). Parameters and integrated cooling are adjusted for comfort and consistency. It’s designed to treat larger areas such as face, neck, chest, hands and arms.

  • MOXI is a 1927 nm non-ablative fractional laser that creates microscopic treatment zones in the upper skin layers. This can improve clarity and fine texture with measured downtime and may support dermal remodelling over a short series.

Both are patient focused devices with adjustable parameters (fluency, pulse patterns, density). This ensures clinicians can tailor treatments to different skin types and skin concerns. From sun damage, uneven skin tone, and early texture changes to suitable patients seeking gradual results.

At Epios, MOXI is positioned as a versatile moxi laser treatment, using laser energy in microscopic zones that support natural renewal and collagen production over time. BBL HEROic (the newer control suite to BBL HERO) addresses colour efficiently across larger treatment areas.

Together, BBL Moxi treatments provide a versatile toolkit across skin rejuvenation, including:

  • mild pigmentation

  • early wrinkles

  • melasma

  • acne scars

All with an appropriate within a personalised skincare regimen and treatment care plan. Let's take a closer comparison between the two devices.

When we choose one or both.

  • Choose BBL HEROic when colour is the main concern (freckles/sun spots, diffuse facial redness, visible vessels, general photoageing). Suitability depends on skin type, recent sun exposure and medications.

  • Choose MOXI for a light, visible refresh in surface tone/texture and early sun change. It suits many skin presentations when density/passes are matched to season, skin type and tolerance.

  • Combine BBL + MOXI when both colour and surface changes are priorities. Melasma is assessed cautiously and settings are individualised. (Some pigment conditions require conservative planning.)

Role

Non-ablative laser technologies for skin rejuvenation and surface texture

Filtered light (not a laser) for colour correction, pores, skin texture, skin tightening.

Together cover tone + texture

Best for

Early sun damage, mild pigmentation, complexion, fine lines; supports collagen production.

BBL HEROic treatments target pigmentation, redness, skin texture, pores, skin tightening.

Colour (BBL) vs surface (MOXI).

Suitability cues

Broad skin type range; versatile treatment with measured downtime.

Good for most skin types (with prep required for darker skin types).

Personalised to concern and skin.

When we combine

Pairs well when texture and fine lines are priorities.

Pairs well when colour is the main concern.

BBL MOXI plans help with multiple skin concerns.

How BBL HEROic works: broadband light vs laser energy—what it targets.

BBL treatment uses different filters and pulse patterns that let the device focus on brown pigment (melanin) and red vessels (haemoglobin).

When those structures absorb the light, they heat briefly and are then cleared by the body over time.

In clinic, BBL HEROic is delivered in smooth, pass-based sweeps with integrated cooling to support comfort and consistency.

Larger areas—face, neck, chest, even arms—can be treated efficiently because the platform is designed for speed and uniform coverage.

We adjust parameters for your skin type and recent sun exposure, aiming for a balanced response rather than a “high as possible” setting.

BBL treatment benefits & expected results (photoageing, redness, pigment)

What does this mean for results? Progressive changes after each session: pigment may darken before it sheds, and redness can soften across a short serie of treatments. Skin tightening may be immediately noticed, and then continue to improve with multiple sessions.

The benefits are most noticeable in overall evenness and clarity, especially where colour change is the main concern.

When we use BBL HEROic: concerns and skin types it suits.

BBL treatment is chosen when colour change, skin tone or skin laxity are the main concerns in the skin.

Typical indications include:

  • sun spots and freckles (brown pigment)

  • visible facial redness or broken capillaries (red vessels or rosacea)

  • general photoageing across face, neck, chest, hands and arms

  • skin tone unevenness

  • skin laxity (sagging)

  • acne

This treatment suits a broad range of skin types, particularly Fitzpatrick I–III, with careful parameter selection for darker tones and recent sun exposure.

We also consider medications, active inflammation, and timing with holidays/outdoor work to keep the plan practical.

How MOXI works: the science behind MOXI (non-ablative laser energy).

The science behind MOXI centres on delivering non-ablative laser energy to the skin in tiny, evenly spaced microthermal zones. Instead of removing the surface, this controlled laser energy warms precise columns within the upper layers, signalling natural renewal while leaving surrounding tissue intact.

MOXI uses a thulium wavelength (well suited to superficial pigment) to create those micro-zones with adjustable density and pass counts.

We tailor settings to concern, skin type, and season—lower densities for a light “refresh,” higher densities for more noticeable surface polishing over a short series.

As the micro-zones resolve, dullness and early unevenness can look improved, with a gradual brightening that supports visible skin clarity over time.

MOXI laser in Sydney: fractional, non-ablative approach for early sun damage

Why “non-ablative” matters: it offers flexibility across more months of the year, can be adapted to busy schedules, and is appropriate for a wide range of skin presentations when parameters are chosen carefully.

Because the surface remains largely undisturbed, MOXI maintains the skin’s protective barrier—one reason recovery is typically brief and makeup can usually return sooner than with ablative options.

In practice, MOXI sits in the gentle-to-moderate laser category—enough stimulus for meaningful change in surface tone and fine texture, without the extended downtime associated with deeper, ablative resurfacing. General downtime for moxi laser is approximatley 3-5 days of peppering on the skin or mends.

Benefits of MOXI and who it suits

MOXI is chosen for a light, visible refresh—skin that looks clearer, more polished and better balanced with modest downtime. Results develop across a short series, suiting everyday life and maintenance rather than a single, dramatic overhaul, however even one session will usually provide noticeable results.

It’s a good fit when early sun change, faint blotchiness or fine surface roughness are the main concerns, and when plans need to work around seasons or events. Many skin types can be accommodated with settings adjusted to lifestyle and tolerance.

If colour change (reds/browns) is the priority, see our note on when BBL treatment comes first and how the two can be paired. Final settings, pacing and number of sessions are personalised after assessment to align expectations with achievable outcomes.

What to expect

  • BBL: Targeted colour may briefly darken before shedding; diffuse redness typically softens over a short series. We aim for a balanced response over “maximal” settings.

  • MOXI: As the micro-zones resolve, skin can look clearer and more even over several sessions, with recovery usually shorter than ablative resurfacing.

Important safety & risk information

All procedures carry risks and aren’t suitable for everyone. Possible effects include temporary redness, warmth, swelling, bronzing/“peppering,” flaking, acneiform breakouts, photosensitivity and temporary darkening/lightening of pigment; rare but serious risks include burns, blistering, infection and scarring. Multiple sessions are often required and results vary. We’ll review your medical history, recent sun exposure, skin type and medications (e.g., photosensitisers) before recommending treatment. Follow pre-/post-care and sun protection instructions.
